Gary Dwayne Payton II is an American basketball player, born in Seattle, Washington and belongs to mixed ethnicity. He is a point guard in NBA for the Washington Wizards team. He is called by his nickname “The Mitten”, in regard to his father who was nicknamed “The Glove”.

His greatest achievements include the NBA G League champion trophy in 2019, Bob Cousy award, Naismith Player of the year award, AP Honourable Mention, All-American honors, Two-time winner of First-team All-Pac-12, Two-time Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year award, All-Defensive Team title multiple times.

Gary joined Spring Valley high school in Las Vegas. He moved to Westwind Preparatory Academy which is a charter public high school in Phoenix, Arizona. For higher education, he got enrolled in Salt Lake Community College in Utah.

He joined Spring Valley High School where he spent two years of his life playing basketball and also swimming prior to his recruitment. Then, he got enrolled in an academy named the Westwind Preparatory Academy. Later on, he joined the Salt Lake Community College in Utah. He recorded scoring 9.4 points with 6.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists each game, where he led his team win the Region 18 Championship and SWAC title as a freshman.

During his sophomore season, his average was also pretty decent to 14.1 points and 7.9 rebounds each game and he won Co-Player of the Year award and Region 18 Most Valuable Player honors where his team won consistently two times Region 18 title. His career at the Oregon State was also a great success.

Gary remained undrafted in NBA draft 2016, but he was assigned to the Houston Rockets to play in NBA Summer League, but he was soon waived by the franchise after playing few games. He was signed by the Rio Grande Valley Vipers; a team of the NBA Development League and he was top-scorer 51 points with the loss to Los Angeles D-Fenders.

In 2017, Gary was signed by the Milwaukee Bucks and he made his debut for the Bucks with scoring 5 points against the Dallas Mavericks. But, Bucks acquired Sean Kilpatrick in place for Gary.

In 2018, he was assigned to the Los Angeles Lakers in a dual- contract to play for the Lakers and their G League team, South Bay Lakers. Meanwhile, he also joined the training camp of Portland Trail Blazers after getting waived by the Lakers.

In 2019, Gary was signed by the Washington Wizards in a 10-day contract and very soon, the franchise announced that they have signed Gary in a regular rookie contract.
