Gary got admission to Hamilton South-Eastern High School in Indiana. In his sophomore season, he averaged 14.6 points with 4.3 rebounds each game. Playing as a junior, his average ranged around 18.3 points, 5.2 rebounds each game and leading the Royals to the Class 4A regional finals. The Royals got the championship title the second time in school history.
Playing as a senior, he averaged 25.4 points with 7.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists each game with being the top scorer of the Royals. He also played as a football player at Hamilton. His team won three league championship titles and also a sectional championship.
He signed a letter of intent with the Michigan University team, where he averaged 12.9 points grabbing 2.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists each game and he was awarded the Big Ten Freshman of the Year title. He became the only Spartan player to win this title since 1986.
In 2014 draft of NBA, Garry was picked by the Chicago Bulls but later he was traded to another team, the Denver Nuggets. He signed his first rookie scale contract after performing supremely in Summer League and averaged 18.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.7 steals in just five Summer League games for the Nuggets.
He made his regular game NBA debut against the Indiana Pacers scoring 13 points and 3 rebounds with the loss to the Pacers.
