Edy Tavares

Walter Samuel Edy Tavares De Veiga is a Cape Verdean basketball player. He was born on an island named Maio in the Republic of Cape Verde. He belongs to the African ethnicity.

His achievements include the All-Euro-League Second Team award, Euro-League Best Defender award, Euro-League championship trophy, Spanish League championship trophy, NBA D-League Defensive Player of the Year award and various other titles.

Edy is a son of Linete Tavares Frederico, who had a small store and his father De Veiga Tavares was a fisherman, who mostly spent his time in the sea. He has two brothers Javier Tavares and Walter Tavares.

Edy dated a girl from Maio named Paula Grimón and they got married in 2018. The couple is seen enjoying their lives and sharing their hangout pictures on social media.

They have not planned about having children as Edy has not completely settled in his career but Edy is gonna surprise his fans soon.

Edy took his early education from Maio High School but he left school without completing his studies to help his family. So, he didn’t get any further education.

Edy didn’t play basketball until the age of 17. He joined CB Gran Canaria, a team in Liga EBA. He was transferred to UB La Palma, a team of LEB Oro for a season. But, he re-joined Gran Canaria and participated in Liga ACB League.

He joined the Domestic League where he played from the Herbalife Gran Canaria and he performed outstandingly in Liga ACB league. He hired an agency to join the NBA in 2013 but remained unpicked.

In 2014, he was picked by the Atlanta Hawks. He became the first person from Cape Verdean to be selected in NBA. But, he was already in contract with the Canaria. So, he returned to complete his contract with the franchise.

In 2015, Edy made his debut in the NBA Summer League from the Atlanta Hawks. He got multiple team contracts to Austin Spurs, Canton Charge and Bakersfield Jam which are famed teams of NBA Developmental League. The Hawks canceled his contract after appearing just in one regular match of the Summer League.

In 2016, the free-bird got selected by the Raptors 905 of the Developmental League and he was entitled with various titles during this League.

Edy again made a comeback to NBA through Cleveland Cavaliers. He made a victorious debut scoring 10 rebounds and loss to the Raptors.  He didn’t play the playoffs because of his hand injury. The franchise waived him due to not having a satisfactory and up-to-the-mark performance and he returned back to Spain.

In 2017, he signed a contract with Real Madrid and took part in the Euro-League where Madrid won the Championship. He scored an average of 6.5 points with 5.3 rebounds each game during the League.

Edy participated in the Spanish Super-cup Tournament and while playing semifinals, he made a record of highest 7 blocks in a game. His Euro-League stats are quite satisfying with an average of 12.1 points with 5.8 rebounds each game.
