Best Wireless Routers 2022

best wireless router 2019You’ll admit:

A good wireless router is on top of the list of gadgets that every 21st-millennium person wants to be at their home.

Actually, let me edit this statement and add those hundreds of thousands of offices that cannot perform well without having one or more internet routers.

However, As necessary as a wireless router is, the problems start with volume. There are simply too many of them and a layman does not know which one to choose, because even the good ones cannot be counted on all ten fingers.

This is exactly what I address in this guide; get ready to know about the best wireless routers for 2022.

I promise that once you are done reading this guide, you’ll be able to decide (based on your requirements and budget) as to which wireless router suits you the best.

Best Wireless Routers 2022

Google WiFi  [Best for Long Range]

Let’s hear from the giant first:

Google WiFi is a Wi-Fi system and not only a router. When you buy the system, you get 3 devices and not just a single router.

Google’s WiFi is so revolutionary a system that it cannot be compared with any other router on this list – so much so, that you might even consider it something above and beyond a simple router.

For starters:

It connects with your modem just like any other router, but it does so with its primary Wi-Fi point, which, you connect to the modem and the rest of the points only have to be connected with a power plug.

This is it; the job is done. Now all of your home or office will remain within the internet coverage zone, there will be no dead zones and you will be able to enjoy a Skype chat or YouTube streaming wherever you are in your home or office.

Let us have a look at its design, features, performance, and installation:

  • Design-wise, Google WiFi System is the breeze of change when compared to other internet routers.
  • You won’t see alien-looking antenna(s), it is not a heavy and big black rectangle that will take space in your rack or on some table.
  • All you get looks like those sleek, stylish and unique Bluetooth speakers.
  • These are three round devices with a 4.1 inches diameter and a height of only 2.7 inches, these white, and elegant Wi-Fi routers have a thin LED strip dividing each of them in half.
  • Google WiFi System is a perfect match for modern living style.

Here are the features that make Google WiFi a very unique internet coverage system:

  • A single of these three points covers 1,500 sq. ft. thus all three of them cover 4,500 sq.ft.
  • Network Assist Technology keeps you on a faster and better connection, in case you more than one network available.
  • The WiFi app lets you enjoy full control with supervision on connected devices, prioritizing the devices and pausing the internet on Kids’ devices, etc.
  • Expandable Mesh Wi-Fi system lets you add one, two, or more sets of three Google WiFi systems so you can cover an entire office building or a huge residence.
  • Simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz/5GHz) that supports IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac standards.
  • 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports per point, while WAN and LAN on Wi-Fi point connect it with Modem. However, both points on secondary units act like LAN ports.
  • 710 MHz quad-core processor
  • 4 GB flash memory
  • 512 MB RAM

I used a set of Google WiFi system connected with a standard Wi-Fi receiver and here are my observations about performance:

  • Each Wi-Fi system unit holds one 2.4GHz band and one 5GHz band, and together they result in an output that varies from 400Mb/s to 800Mb/s. This only makes Google WiFi system a good router system, but not the best one.
  • In my personal testing, it maxed at roughly 500+ Mb/s and that makes it better than many and inferior to a few.
  • As far as coverage area is concerned, one unit covers only one floor, goes to the second floor and you will notice the average to poor signals.
  • These observations depend a lot on the Wi-Fi receiving modem.

Well, it is a complex Wi-Fi system and that too for your own good so don’t expect a plug n play connectivity.

  • Download a Google WiFi app (Android or Apple) and scan the code on the primary unit.
  • The app will scan the code in a second or two and it will take you to the configuration process so you can configure your network’s name and password.
  • Now pair the secondary units by connecting them to the power socket and tapping Add WiFi point in your Google WiFi app.
  • Bingo! You are good to go!

A Glance at the Google WiFi System

It is the most artistically designed router set with zero antennas approach and best known for larger area coverage. It eliminates dead zones and allows you to have a silky smooth internet experience.

What we liked
  • Covers a larger area – a big home up to 4,500 sq. ft.
  • Sleek and stylish design
  • Lower priced that other high quality routers
  • Smooth and sleek internet experience

What We didn't like
  • In case of using more than one units, it turns into a NAT network which hinders the performance of smart devices and data traffic
  • It is a complex router system and demands a more technically thinking brain

TP-Link AC5400  [Best for Streaming]

You know TP-Link. Every one of us who ever needed a router knows this name since TP-Link routers have made a good reputation to all corners of the world.

However, AC5400 is not just any lowly TP-Link router; in its unique and stylish body with 8 antennas, it is packed and loaded with the latest innovation in wireless technology known as 802.11ad.

So whether you want to stream a 4K video or you are into high-resolution gaming, be sure that AC5400 has got your back with its energy-rich processor and bands.

Here, take a glance at its design, features, performance, and installation:

  • Design-ly speaking, it is definitely not as impressive as Google WiFi that I have reviewed above, but as compared to traditional routers (the category that it falls in) it is one of the best-designed ones.
  • While is heavier and bigger than most of the routers with 9.0 x 9.0 x 1.7 inches dimensions and 4lbs weight, this mass is justified by the power-packed and loaded in this router. All of its 8 antennas can be folded down to help you pack or move it easily.

Here are the features that make it a beast for a wireless router:

  • Multi-band technology that runs three distinct bands at once: 2.4GHz (800Mbps), 5GHz (1733Mbps), and 60GHz (4600Mbps).
  • Supports an 802.11ad update that works with a 60GHz band and offers you the fastest video streaming and seamless HD gaming etc.
  • Leading-edge antenna design
  • Multi-band coupled with 4-stream technology delivers as much as 7200Mbps speed.
  • MU-MIMO technology provides equally fast Wi-Fi for each connected device
  • Free TP-Link Tether app to control Wi-Fi settings anywhere
  • 2 rapid transfer USB 3.0 ports
  • 4 high-speed Ethernet ports
  • 1 WAN port

I used Talon AD7200 with a standard Wi-Fi receiver and here are my observations about its performance:

  • Consistent signals throughout the house
  • Average AD download speed of roughly 800Mbps
  • AD Wi-Fi fails to work if any walls or ceilings come between the router and the device.
  • I case of AC and N speeds, Talon maxed at roughly 400Mbps.

Here is the simple process of installing Talon AD7200:

  • Plug the internet cable in to the router.
  • Connect the LAN cable to your computer.
  • Log in on to start the installation.
  • Alternatively, use the TP-Link Tether app to install the router.

Once done, you are ready for 4K steaming and everything internet.

A Glance at Talon AC5400

This is one of the most advanced wireless routers out there and no wonder one of the best Wi-Fi routers of 2022. However, ‘ad’ speed gives up to obstruction of walls and ceilings; bear in mind.

What we liked
  • Most advanced and focused on the speed Wi-Fi router
  • The trusted brand makes everything trusted from installation to seamless streaming
  • 4 Stream technology and multi-band system
  • Easy to pack and move
What We didn't like
  • AD feature is useless unless you want to use this router in one big place without any walls or ceilings between router and devices
  • Isn’t really the fastest Wi-Fi router

Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 –  [Budget Wireless Router]

Netgear’s Nighthawk AC1900 is a router for those who do not want to compromise over functionality but also cannot afford an expensive wireless Wi-Fi router.

It is one of the best dual-band routers, equipped with three antennas that offer beamforming and better range and that are combined with high power amplifiers that extend the Wi-Fi coverage area.

Its compatibility with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant makes it a home-friendly device because with one voice command you can control its connectivity settings, look up for connected devices and perform many other functions.

The sleek and stylish design of this router makes it a better alternative to the AC5400 that I have reviewed above. It is not gigantic and it is not heavy. What’s more?

It is not only home friendly but kids-friendly too. Use the Nighthawk app to do a lot of things included limiting online content and screen time as well as controlling Circle with Disney Smart Parental Controls.

  • Considering the design of this internet wireless router, the only thing that sort of disappoints is the number of antennas.
  • Irrespective of technology and whatnot inside, antennas decide a lot in terms of coverage.
  • Yet, the smart and sleek (although big and heavy) body of this box deserves praise. This router is the epitome of minimalism.
  • I liked it how they did not turn it into another boring rectangular router will all sides with equal length. The diagonal lines of its body line look good.

Here are the salient features of the Nighthawk wireless router:

  • 802.11ac Dual Band Gigabit offers the maximum speed required for gaming and 4K streaming – also better than 802.11ad routers.

Amped Wireless RTA2600 –  [Best for Wall Penetration]

If you are one of those guys who are always willing to sacrifice money over efficacy, Amped’s RTA2600 Athena is simply for you.

For starters:

This comes with an AC2600. What is an AC2600? Well, AC means that the router is based on the latest networking standard known as 802.11ac, which, as we have discovered, is the best networking standard so far, especially when it comes to penetrating through the walls and ceilings.

Now, what is 2600? 2600 is the value that represents the maximum theoretical bandwidth that a router can reach. In other words, 1200 would be 12000Mbps, 2000 will be 2000Mbps and thus 2600 is 2600Mbps.

To put it simply, this router is based on the most preferable networking standard and its maximum bandwidth is 2600Mbps.

If you’re a person who is interested in the home or office networks, this is exactly the kind of router that you would like to go for. It is a speed-horse and there is no denying it considering that it does not only offer bigger bandwidth but it also comes with dual bands: 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

Let us have a detailed look at the design, features, performance, and installation process of Athena:

  • In terms of design, this router might disappoint those who expect some spaceship or stealth aircraft type look from internet routers, but it is still a good looking router with curved ends and a metal mesh design on both ends.
  • While the size of this router (13 x 10.3 x 3.3) escalates it to the league of heavy and big routers, only 2.6lbs weight makes it a mixed bag.

Here are the most prominent features of Amped Wireless RTA2600 Athena:

  • 16 powerful amplifiers and 4 high gain antennas
  • AC2600 bandwidth
  • 2.4GHz > 800Mbps
  • 5GHz > 1733Mbps
  • Multiuser MIMO to deliver data to multiple devices at a better speed
  • Security features e.g. coverage control, website blocking, and SPI Firewall

A Glance at Amped Wireless RTA2600 Athena

Amped Athena RTA2600 is definitely not the best router for 2022, and not when you see that they set a high price for the kind of a router that you can find at a lesser price, but it is nonetheless an 802.11ac router.

What we liked
  • Really good performance with 802.11ac networking
  • Dual-band router with good speed
  • Easier to set up than many others
  • Very easy setup
What We didn't like
  • Expensive for the specs
  • Unit is likely to require weekly resetting

D-Link DIR 890L –  [Best for Office and Large Home]

Impressive, isn’t it?

From the looks of this router, you can tell that there is something big about it. Well, this router is the range machine in case the biggest complaint that you ever had with a router is the limited coverage area. D-Link claims that of all of its routers, this one has the ultimate coverage area.

And if you are bent on the looks of a router, although I personally rule out this being a reason for buying a Wi-Fi router, you cannot help but compare the cuts, curves, and unorthodox design of this router with that of routers like Asus and Google ones on this list.

Apart from ultimate coverage and style, the specification ‘AC3200’ should be enough to let you know of the speed that you can expect from this spaceship for a router.

To know more, let us have a look at the design, features, performance and setup process:

  • Well, in terms of design, enough has already been said. Call it a spacecraft, Formula1 or a Stealth plane, the design is pretty unique, unmatched and unorthodox.
  • But do you know what’s much better? It is the size and weight of this router.
  • Being a dual-band 802.11ac router, it still weighs at 2.5lbs and its dimensions (9.8 x 15 x 4 inches) only make it look modest.

Here are some of the best features of D-Link DIR 890L:

Apple Airport Extreme 2022 –  [Best Apple Router for 2022]

I missed it:

I know, this is what you must be thinking the whole time; “How could he miss Apple Airport router in the list of top Wi-Fi routers for 2022?”

Well, I could not. This router makes so many records and one could not simply keep it out of such an important list. Speaking of records, it is important to mention that this is one of the most affordable wireless Wi-Fi routers on Amazon.

Price is not the only feather in its cap; there are many others. For example, it is an 802.11ac router, which, you must know by now, is the most highly required router in the present day.

Take design for example; I am an admirer of both the design and the coverage of the Google WiFi system, but this router’s design is even more simple and elegant with everything available in one place.

Let us discover more about its design, features, performance, and installation process:

  • I am unable to fathom the reason why Apple named it Airport; perhaps because it looks a little like the air traffic control tower. To me, it looks more like an elegant, big, and white skyscraper.
  • In short, the design is impressive – just like it has always been in the case of Apple products.
  • However, it is not all about its shape. Take dimensions for example; with a 3.85 x 3.85 x 6.6 inches body and only 2.08lbs weight, this is one of the sleekest and stylish Wi-Fi routers

Here are some of the best features of the Apple Airport Extreme Base Station:

  • Ultrafast 802.11ac Wi-Fi
  • 1.3Gbps maximum reach with compatible devices
  • Simultaneous dual-band support
  • 2.4GHz and 5GHz
  • 6 antennas at the top allow more coverage and faster internet
  • Easy to set with iOS and Macs
  • NAT, DHCP, PPPoE, VPN Passthrough, DNS Proxy, and IPv6, etc.
  • 1 USB port
  • 3 Ethernet Gigabit ports
  • Broadcom CPU
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 128 MB Flash

* Details about CPU and memory are based on a close examination of the hardware installed inside it. They might not be 100% accurate. Apple has not made mention of any of these details.

I used Apple Airport Extreme Base Station with a standard Wi-Fi receiver and here are my observations about its performance:

  • 2.4GHz with close proximity gave off 200Mbps.
  • 2.4GHz with distance and two brick walls gave off 150Mbps.
  • 5GHz with close proximity gave off 180Mbps.
  • 5GHz with distance and two brick walls gave off 80Mbps.

Here is the simple process of the installation of the Apple Airport Extreme Base Station:

  • Connect your Airport Extreme with the modem via WAN port.
  • Connect your router to the power socket.
  • Open Airport Utility from Utilities Folder.
  • Click continue to proceed.
  • Select the option – Create a New Wireless Network and click to continue.
  • Follow on-screen instructions and step by step configure all details.

If you are one of those who always fail to decide as to whom to prefer: form or function, this router is absolutely for you. In a unique tower-like form, this is a powerful 802.11ac router that comes at an affordable price.

What we liked
  • Huge brand and big speed at an affordable rate
  • Sleek and stylish design
  • 11ac but compatible with devices using a, b, g, and n
  • Very easy installation
What We didn't like
  • Likely to break in certain circumstances
  • Likely power supply failure

TP-Link Archer C7 –  [Cheap & Effective]

I am not talking of those who buy branded items because they want to get their class validated with Gucci $300+ sunglasses while A+ replica of the same can be acquired at as low as $20.

My addressees are the people who want a go-to device or product and that too at a rate that they can afford. TP-Link’s Archer C7 is not the top router of 2022, but it does the job.

Better yet, you do not have to break the bank to get your hands on a router that is dual-band, and that offers really good internet speed and coverage as well.

Not only this router is good for anyone who wants an affordable but effective Wi-Fi router for networking, it also looks really good. Instead of the stereotype matte finish, this one comes with glossy black colors and a curved LED signals panel in the front of it.

Neither by design nor by performance this router lags behind any of its competitors, but to get a better understanding of whether it is a steal or not, let us have a look at its design, features, performance, and installation process:

  • With 3 antennas, this budget router is definitely not in the competition to beat the Asus one of its competitors, but it does the job.
  • The glossy black finish makes it look prominent among the rest of them and the curve of the panel with green LEDs is just icing on the cake.
  • However, where it beats other routers 6 days to Sunday is in terms of weight. While its size is pretty standard at 9.6 x 6.3 x 1.3 inches, its weight is only 1.9lbs.

Here are the most important features of TP-Link Archer C7:

  • Supports 802.11ac standard
  • Simultaneous 2.4GHz (450Mbps) and 5GHz bands (1300Mbps) 1.75Gbps total throughput
  • 2 USB 2.0 ports
  • Guest Network feature to provide safe internet experience to guests
  • Higher quality antenna technology with 3 flexible external antennas
  • 720MHz Qualcomm Atheros Processor
  • 128 MB RAM
  • 16 MB Flash

I used TP-Link Archer C7 with a standard Wi-Fi receiver and here are my observations about its performance:

  • 5GHz with close proximity gave off 350Mbps.
  • 5GHz with distance and two brick walls gave off 200Mbps
  • 2.4GHz with close proximity gave off 120Mbps
  • 2.4GHz with distance and two brick walls gave off 65Mbps.

Here is the simple process of the installation of TP-Link Archer C7:

  • Plug the internet cable into the router.
  • Connect the LAN cable to your computer.
  • Log in on to start the installation.
  • Alternatively, use the TP-Link Tether app to install the router.

Nicely done! You’re good to enjoy a good-paced internet right now.

A Glance at TP-Link Archer C7

TP-Link’s Archer C7 is definitely not the best router for 2022, not even the best router of this list, but it surely is the cheapest router that I included in my list, and yet it is compatible with 802.11ac. Also, it lacks many latest functions or technologies, but it offers constant internet usage without any problems.

What we liked
  • The cheapest router on this list and yet effective
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi wireless router
  • Easy setup process
  • NAS capability – a pleasant surprise
What We didn't like
  • Lousy material
  • A little on the south of durability

How to Choose a Good Wireless Router for 2022?

Buying Guide for Best Wireless Routers

Although, we have declared D-Link’s DIR 890L the winner of this comparison, you might still not want to buy it because of the considerably higher price.

In case you want to do your own research, here are some basic qualities of the Wi-Fi wireless routers that you should always look for while buying wireless Wi-Fi routers:

Networking Standard

The first and foremost quality that you should look for is advanced and better networking standards. The shape or design of a router does not matter, but mostly it is its technology.

For example:

802.11ad is considered the most recent and latest networking standard and we know that one or two routers on our list try to sell it.

Tests show that it is good and fastest only as long as there is no brick or ceiling between the device and the router. This means from one small room to a big giant hall, this technology will beat 802.11ac.

In most cases, customers expect the router to work beyond doors, walls, and ceilings as well. This is where 802.11ad fails and 802.11ac comes to the rescue.

You must have noticed that some of these routers are tri-band while most of them have dual-bands: 2.4GHz and 5Ghz.

Unless you are a geek and your entire home depends on devices that need to be connected to the internet for proper functioning, you do not need a ridiculous 60GHz.

It is a marketing gimmick and the routers with anything bigger than 5Ghz are trying to sell you the technology that you do not need.

As a matter of fact, for a small home or office, 2.4GHz is enough and if you have a bigger home or office, 5GHz working at a good speed and coverage is all that you need.

As you know that the purpose of a networking router is to provide the internet to all those devices (including mobile ones) that rely on the internet. For this purpose, you need a router, which might not provide the internet as speedy as F1car, but which spreads the internet signals throughout your home or office.

For this purpose you need to look for routers that have better coverage; for example, Google WiFi’s all three units can give you maximum coverage of 4,500 sq. ft. So if you have a big place, choose the router that can give you good coverage.

So, that was our best wireless router guide for 2022. I must clear one thing here. I did the comparison between all those wireless routers to make it easy for everybody to choose their desired router.

Personally, I have played with all those different routers. For me, all performed well. So, I can say that all those devices are the best. If you are on a tight budget, go for an affordable one. There’s nothing to worry about!

  • Which wireless router are you currently using?
  • What’s the problem with that?
  • Which router do you want/wish to buy?

Let me know via comments. I would love to reply.

Have an amazing day

We have been using the current router for a long time. It was good! But, from the last few weeks, i’m facing this problem!! Not just me, but everybody at home 🙁

    Please guide!

    Thank you

  3. Normally i don’t leave comments on the websites. But, your well-researched router guide helped me and friends in many ways!! So, we wanted to say THANK YOU!! <3

  4. Your ratings helped me buying the best wifi router for my home! Indeed D-Link’s DIR 890L was the BEST among other routers! I agree with you on this!!

  5. Glad to visit your blog as it helps me a lot to choose the best wireless router among all. As we know that every router has its own pros and cons but after reading your blog i get understand which one is best to use.

  6. Hi Sam, thanks for this comprehensive router guide. Keep it up!! 🙂

What’s the best wireless router you would recommend for an office?

    • Hi Joseph,

      Thanks for the comment.

Although, all the wireless routers on the list are perfect. But, if you are asking my suggestion then I suggest Google Wifi. You’ll love it!

  7. You made some good points about wireless routers. I looked on the internet for additional information about different routers and found most people will go along with your views. Good job OneCrack.

  8. Hi There,

We have a fairly small home but it includes a modem at the back of the house and several brick walls which makes it tricky to extend a signal to the front of the house where we stream video. I noticed that you measured the Mbps with distance and through 2 brick walls on several of your reviews and it seems like the Apple Extreme came out with best there. We were told to buy the Eero routers. Any idea how those compare in terms of distance and brick?

  9. Hi, mostly I liked your reviews but have a question or two as you only mentioned it regarding the Apple Airport Extreme Base Station.
    1. Are any of these other devices still giving compatibility with devices using a, b, g, and n? I ask this mostly because at times I find a need for some of those types of devices needing to be connected to my internal network or wifi for various reasons. I know in the past there have been a few devices that did not support some of the older protocols and I have had to return or retire the devices as they drove me nuts when that time came.
    2. Although that the newer ad technology is starting to take off or soon will be and I understand that even with the ac and even previous technology that certain metals and such in the walls and ceilings can interfere with signals and bounce the away or warp them so to speak. I am more confused as to why the ad devices you state almost emphatically no brick or ceiling between the device and the router. The 802.11ad fails and 802.11ac comes to rescue. Do any of the ad devices have any auto fall back to the ac standards when needed? Considering most wifi needs line of site so to speak.
    3. I know that often when routers such as you briefly mentioned regarding Netgear, “Any Firmware updates or IP configuration issues are not protected once out of 90 Days Tech Support window”, although that in itself is mostly normal for most hardware mfg’s today, how many of the MFG’s will still keep up the last firmware updates on their support site and accessible to those who are out of warranty but still have the devices and may need to update a piece of equipment? I know Dlink tends to take off from most of their support any device firmware that is not current in their current push for trying to sell the newer devices which not everyone can always afford.
    4. This may be another issue for another topic but, considering that the FCC has removed the older TV Frequencies forcing the consumers to of course buy new TV’s and cable and satellite connections and they are now allowing the Cell companies and ISP Providers to start using those frequencies for both 5G and other wifi connections, how is this or will it also be another addition in the future to any of the above mentioned routers if that makes sense?
Thanks for your time and hope you continue your great reports.

  10. Hi, thanks for the review post! i see you recommended DLink DIR 890L. Do you think Google Wifi is also a good router for a small home? if we compare both DLink vs Google Wifi? What do you think?

    Many thanks!

    • Hi George,

      Thanks for the comment!

Both routers are good! But, if you ask my suggestion, I think you should go for D-Link DIR 890L. You’ll not be disappointed 😉
