Best Wireless Routers

You’ll admit:

A good wireless router is on top of the list of gadgets that every 21st-millennium person wants to be at home.

Let me edit this statement and add those hundreds of thousands of offices that cannot perform well without having one or more internet routers.

However, As necessary as a wireless router is, the problems start with volume. There are too many of them, and a layman does not know which one to choose, because even the good ones cannot be counted on all ten fingers.

This is exactly what I address in this guide; get ready to know about the best wireless routers.

Google WiFi – [su_highlight background=”#0F9D58″ color=”#ffffff”][Best for Long Range]
[/su_highlight]

Let’s hear from the giant first:

Google WiFi is a Wi-Fi system and not only a router. When you buy the system, you get 3 devices, not just a single router.

Google’s WiFi is so revolutionary a system that it cannot be compared with any other router on this list – so much so that you might even consider it something above and beyond a simple router.

For starters:

It connects with your modem just like any other router, but it does so with its primary Wi-Fi point, which you connect to the modem and the rest of the points only have to be connected with a power plug.

This is it; the job is done. Now all of your home or office will remain within the internet coverage zone, there will be no dead zones, and you can enjoy a Skype chat or YouTube streaming wherever you are in your home or office.

Let us have a look at its design, features, performance, and installation:

Design

[su_list icon=”icon: arrow-right” icon_color=”#2ABF00″]

  • Design-wise, Google WiFi System is the breeze of change compared to other internet routers.
  • You won’t see alien-looking antenna(s); it is not a heavy and big black rectangle that will take space in your rack or on some table.
  • All you get looks like those sleek, stylish and unique Bluetooth speakers.
  • These are three round devices with a 4.1 inches diameter and a height of only 2.7 inches; these white and elegant Wi-Fi routers have a thin LED strip dividing each of them in half.
  • Google WiFi System is a perfect match for modern living style.

Features

Here are the features that make Google WiFi a unique internet coverage system:

[su_list icon=”icon: arrow-right” icon_color=”#2ABF00″]

  • A single of these three points covers 1,500 sq. ft. thus, all three covers 4,500 sq. ft.
  • Network Assist Technology keeps you on a faster and better connection in case you have more than one network available.
  • The WiFi app lets you enjoy full control with supervision on connected devices, prioritizing the devices and pausing the internet on Kids’ devices, etc.
  • Expandable Mesh Wi-Fi system lets you add one, two, or more sets of three Google WiFi systems to cover an entire office building or a huge residence.
  • Simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz/5GHz) that supports IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac standards.
  • 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports per point, while WAN and LAN on Wi-Fi point connect it with Modem. However, both points on secondary units act like LAN ports.
  • 710 MHz quad-core processor
  • 4 GB flash memory
  • 512 MB RAM

Performance

I used a set of Google WiFi systems connected with a standard Wi-Fi receiver, and here are my observations about performance:

[su_list icon=”icon: arrow-right” icon_color=”#2ABF00″]

  • Each Wi-Fi system unit holds one 2.4GHz band and one 5GHz band, resulting in an output that varies from 400Mb/s to 800Mb/s. This only makes Google WiFi system a good router system, but not the best one.
  • In my personal testing, it maxed at roughly 500+ Mb/s, making it better than many and inferior to a few.
  • As far as coverage area is concerned, one unit covers only one floor, goes to the second floor, and you will notice average to poor signals.
  • These observations depend a lot on the Wi-Fi receiving modem.

[/su_list][/su_note]

[su_note note_color=”#fff” text_color=”#333333″ radius=”10″ class=””]

Installation

Well, it is a complex Wi-Fi system for your good, so don’t expect a plug n play connectivity.

[su_list icon=”icon: arrow-right” icon_color=”#2ABF00″]

  • Download a Google WiFi app (Android or Apple) and scan the code on the primary unit.
  • The app will scan the code in a second or two, and it will take you to the configuration process so you can configure your network’s name and password.
  • Now pair the secondary units to the power socket and tap Add WiFi point in your Google WiFi app.
  • Bingo! You are good to go!

Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 – [su_highlight background=”#0F9D58″ color=”#ffffff”][Budget Wireless Router][/su_highlight]

Netgear’s Nighthawk AC1900 is a router for those who do not want to compromise on functionality but cannot afford an expensive wireless Wi-Fi router.

It is one of the best dual-band routers, equipped with three antennas that offer beamforming and better range combined with high power amplifiers that extend the Wi-Fi coverage area.

Its compatibility with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant makes it a home-friendly device because, with one voice command, you can control its connectivity settings, look up for connected devices and perform many other functions.

This router’s sleek and stylish design makes it a better alternative to the AC5400 I have reviewed above. It is not gigantic, and it is not heavy. What’s more?

It is not only home-friendly but kids-friendly too. Use the Nighthawk app to do a lot of things included limiting online content and screen time as well as controlling Circle with Disney Smart Parental Controls.

Asus RT-AC88U 2019 – [su_highlight background=”#0F9D58″ color=”#ffffff”][Best for Gaming][/su_highlight]

Are you into gaming?

It doesn’t matter whether you love Dota or PUBG; you need a high-speed internet router right next to your station to provide you a constant internet supply without any omissions.

This is exactly why Asus RT-AC88U is known as one of the top routers. It comes packed and loaded with enough power and pace to keep your gaming engines revving all night.

At 5GHz band, it can go up to as high as 2100 Mbps which, as per their claim, 80% faster than any other 5GHz band routers in the market.

The 4T4R (4 transmit 4 receive) antenna design ensures 33% greater coverage areas as compared to other routers since its reach goes up to 5,000 sq. ft. which makes it even better than the Google WiFi system because all three units of that system still cover a maximum of 4,500 sq. ft.

Let us get to know about its design, features, performance, and installation:

  • However, while its weight is 2.6lbs, roughly half the weight of the heaviest routers, it is bigger than most with a whopping 30 x 6.5 x 18.8 inches body.
  • Yet the router is far from being ugly, and it is praised for its cuts and curves.

More news – it is open source ready so if you are coding or programming experts, you can manipulate the firmware and make changes you like, but at your own risk.

Apart from this competitive edge, there is so much more that this Linksys WRT1900 AC router has to offer. What makes it one of the best Wi-Fi wireless routers, is its 4 Ethernet Gigabit ports that provide faster wire speeds than many other routers.

With a 2.4GHz band and a 5GHz band, this wireless router is enough for a healthy and speedy internet experience in a considerably big home or small office; not to mention that provided if the router’s placement is done in accordance to the size of the place, it eliminates all dead zones and provides equal coverage to all nooks and corners.

Enough talking, let us have a look at the design, features, performance, and installation process of this router:

Design

[su_list icon=”icon: arrow-right” icon_color=”#2ABF00″]

  • When speaking of the design of this router, one cannot ignore the most prominent factor that makes it different from many other routers like Netgear, Google, and TP-Link ones on this list; it presents a beautiful blend of blue and black, with a smart and sleek touch to it.
  • It cannot be called too big with a 9.8 x 7.7 x 2 inches size, but it is not among the small ones.
  • Likewise, with 3.45lbs it is only a few ounces shy of the Netgear and TP-Link routers’ weight.
  • Overall, it has a promising design that covers up for size and weight.

Amped Wireless RTA2600 – [su_highlight background=”#0F9D58″ color=”#ffffff”][Best for Wall Penetration][/su_highlight]

If you are one of those guys who are always willing to sacrifice money over efficacy, Amped’s RTA2600 Athena is simply for you.

For starters:

This comes with an AC2600. What is an AC2600? AC means that the router is based on the latest networking standard known as 802.11ac, which, as we have discovered, is the best networking standard so far, especially when penetrating through walls and ceilings.

Now, what is 2600? 2600 is the value that represents the maximum theoretical bandwidth that a router can reach. In other words, 1200 would be 12000Mbps, 2000 would be 2000Mbps, and thus 2600 is 2600Mbps.

This router is based on the preferable networking standard, and its maximum bandwidth is 2600Mbps.

If you’re a person who is interested in a home or office networks, this is exactly the kind of router that you would like to go for. It is a speed-horse and there is no denying it considering that it does not only offer bigger bandwidth but it also comes with dual bands: 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

Let us have a detailed look at the design, features, performance, and installation process of Athena:

[su_note note_color=”#fff” text_color=”#333333″ radius=”10″ class=””]

Design

[su_list icon=”icon: arrow-right” icon_color=”#2ABF00″]

  • In terms of design, this router might disappoint those who expect some spaceship or stealth aircraft type look from internet routers, but it is still a good looking router with curved ends and a metal mesh design on both ends.
  • While the size of this router (13 x 10.3 x 3.3) escalates it to the league of heavy and big routers, only 2.6lbs weight makes it a mixed bag.

D-Link DIR 890L – [su_highlight background=”#0F9D58″ color=”#ffffff”][Best for Office and Large Home][/su_highlight]

Impressive, isn’t it?

From the looks of this router, you can tell there is something big about it. Well, this router is the range machine in case your biggest complaint with a router is the limited coverage area. D-Link claims that this one has the ultimate coverage area of all of its routers.

And if you are bent on the looks of a router, although I rule out this being a reason for buying a Wi-Fi router, you cannot help but compare the cuts, curves, and unorthodox design of this router with that of routers like Asus and Google ones on this list.

Apart from ultimate coverage and style, the specification ‘AC3200’ should be enough to let you know of the speed that you can expect from this spaceship for a router.

Apple Airport Extreme – [su_highlight background=”#0F9D58″ color=”#ffffff”][Best Apple Router for][/su_highlight]

However:

Price is not the only feather in its cap; many others exist. For example, it is an 802.11ac router, which, you must know by now, is the most highly required router in the present day.

TP-Link Archer C7 – [su_highlight background=”#0F9D58″ color=”#ffffff”][Cheap & Effective][/su_highlight]

How to Choose a Good Wireless Router?

Although we have declared D-Link’s DIR 890L the winner of this comparison, you might still not want to buy it because of the considerably higher price.

In case you want to do your research, here are some basic qualities of the Wi-Fi wireless routers that you should always look for while buying wireless Wi-Fi routers:

Networking Standard

The first and foremost quality you should look for is advanced and better networking standards. The shape or design of a router does not matter, but mostly it is its technology.

For example:

802.11ad is considered the latest networking standard, and we know that one or two routers on our list try to sell it.

However:

Tests show that it is good and fastest only if there is no brick or ceiling between the device and the router. This means from one small room to a big giant hall; this technology will beat 802.11ac.

Yet:

Customers expect the router to work beyond doors, walls, and ceilings. This is where 802.11ad fails, and 802.11ac comes to the rescue.

Bands

You must have noticed some routers are tri-band while most have dual-bands: 2.4GHz and 5Ghz.

Well:

Unless you are a geek and your entire home depends on devices that need to be connected to the internet for proper functioning, you do not need a ridiculous 60GHz.

Mostly:

It is a marketing gimmick, and the routers with anything bigger than 5 GHz are trying to sell you the technology you do not need.

For a small home or office, 2.4GHz is enough, and if you have a bigger home or office, 5GHz working at a good speed and coverage is all you need.

Range/Coverage

As you know, a networking router’s purpose is to provide the internet to all those devices (including mobile ones) that rely on the internet. For this purpose, you need a router, which might not provide the internet as speedy as F1car, but which spreads the internet signals throughout your home or office.

For this purpose, you need to look for routers with better coverage; for example, Google WiFi’s all three units can give you maximum coverage of 4,500 sq. ft. So if you have a big place, choose the router that can give you good coverage.

Conclusion:

So, that was our best wireless router guide. I must clarify one thing here. I compared all those wireless routers to make it easy for everybody to choose their desired router.

I have played with all those different routers. For me, all performed well. So, I can say that all those devices are the best. If you are on a tight budget, go for an affordable one. There’s nothing to worry about!

So,

  • Which wireless router are you currently using?
  • What’s the problem with that?
  • Which router do you want/wish to buy?

Let me know via comments. I would love to reply.

Have an amazing day

Sam
